On the pursuit of making good TRPGs

Here's an informal manifesto about how to make good TRPGs:

  1. Good TRPGs are customized to your table. You should make them yourself, because only you know the group directly. They should then be tweaked with the experience you garner. It's a good idea to start from a published game that has already undergone playtesting.
  2. Good TRPGs require trust. Trust is hard to gain and easy to lose, and once lost it's basically impossible to get back. You probably want to make sure you can trust someone before inviting them to your party. Do other activities together before you take the leap. If you live nearby, go shopping or do other chores together. If you live far away, maybe watch a movie together? Or just have a nice, long call while you work on other things?
  3. Good TRPGs don't require you to fix them. You should be able to use public target numbers and rolls without the game breaking down.
